For me, this was a very hard thing to accept.  I always felt I had to do everything in my business to make it successful. For over 25 years, I owned and managed an established and profitable real estate brokerage including two residential real estate developments, and a family ranch that ran cattle, sheep, and hunting and fishing excursions.  Not only was I the bookkeeper, I was the CFO (Chief Financial Officer), the CCG (Chief Cowgirl), and the CCBW (Chief Cook and Bottle Washer). I was also a veterinarian assistant, but I didn’t keep that job very long!

I was crazy BUSY! I finally snapped. One of my companies was facing an IRS audit; real estate sales where stagnant, expenses were piling up; money was flying out the door to “God Knows Where”; my credit cards were maxed out and I was just sick and tired of running around like a chicken with her head cut off!

…Get more listings, get more buyers, copier‐fax‐ scanner combo machine is on the fritz, agents complaining about commissions, NO COPIES!, closing nightmares, ranch hands quit, four horses killed by lightning, admin out sick for a week, logging prices drop to record lows, insurance guy coming for the workmen’s comp audit, spend too many nights working which upsets my family, little brother runs jeep through garage door. As Charlie Brown says “AAUGH!!!!

As God would have it at this insane time, I met my business coach, Judy, at a real estate convention. After speaking with her a little while, she asked me this question: Are you serious about your business? I was taken aback. Of course, I was serious! She showed me how she could help me get control of my businesses and put some sanity back into my life. I decided to trust her to help me sort out my problems, so I squeezed her initial fee onto my maxed‐out credit card. One of the best decisions I ever made!

Coach Judy told me that the “books” are the most powerful level of control and information in a business. They’re more important than the keys to the office, and they exercise control over more parts of the business than anything else.

She said, “If your books are mess, then your business is a mess. The books show if the company is making a profit, and they’ll reveal the almost imperceptible hints of failure months before actual catastrophe strikes. Having accurate accounting systems and knowing what those numbers are telling you are the bedrock of any financial freedom!”

Here’s what else she said to me:

“You started your business because you loved the work that you do. You’re in business because you wanted to be your own boss. With everything else you have to do to keep the business running, it can be overwhelming to keep up with your taxes, invoices, bills, accounts and all the innumerable other recordkeeping, bookkeeping and accounting tasks. As I see it, running your business now seems like it’s just a JOB you know how to do really well, and a dozen or so other JOBS you don’t know how to do at all!” Oh boy, was she right.

Fast-forward a couple of months of working with Coach Judy, I was ready to hire a professional bookkeeper.  Oh, what a relief!!!

With Kathy and Coach Judy’s help, my real estate office became the Overall #1 National Office in the United Country Real Estate Franchise and stayed in the top 10 for 5 years straight!

I retired from the real estate business but kept my bookkeeper.  Kathy and I worked virtually (she in New Mexico, me in Virginia) with my consulting business.  It was her idea to offer the bookkeeping to my coaching clients since many of them were like me – needing help breathing easier and growing a profitable company.

When I read Profit First by Mike Michalowicz (I’m a long-time fan of Mike’s!), I decided it was the PERFECT FIT for my clients.  Kathy and I used a similar strategy, but I think Mike’s is easier!
